SMM10, March 26-Aluminum is becoming one of the important industries in Iceland. Because of Iceland's geothermal and hydraulic energy, the rich power supply has created conditions for the development of the aluminum industry.

The cost of importing alumina in Iceland in 2016 was low compared with the cost of imports in 2017 and 2018. In 2016, Iceland spent about $465 million importing 1.885 million tons of alumina. In 2017, trading volume fell, but not due to import costs, compared with $598 million. In 2018, the cost of imports is expected to be US $731 million, an increase of 57 per cent over 2016 and 22 per cent over 2017.

Australia was Iceland's largest exporter of alumina from 2016 to 2017, and Brazil is expected to become its main exporter this year, with exports of about 718900 tons. Australia is expected to export 617730 tons of alumina to Iceland this year and Jamaica 238413 tons.
