Northvolt, a Swedish battery manufacturing start-up, has teamed up with South Bay Solutions, a supplier of Tesla (Tesla), to set up a factory in Poland to produce battery systems for energy storage companies and the mining industry.
The company was founded by Peter Karlsson (Peter Carlsson), a former Tesla executive. The company announced ambitious plans last year to build a large battery production plant in Sweden by 2023 with a planned capacity of 32 billion watt-hours. The company said its production plant in (Gdansk), Gdansk, Poland, would extract batteries from its Swedish plant to develop battery systems or modules.
South Bay Solutions focuses on manufacturing battery modules, which typically include batteries and electronic control, cooling and heating systems. The company has not yet reached an agreement to supply batteries to a carmaker, but earlier this month it said it was working with BMW (BMW) in Germany to develop a process for recycling batteries, adding that I hope this is the first step in "long-term cooperation." The merger of BMW and Northvolt is likely to raise the profile of Northvolt, as investors need to be convinced that Northvolt's Swedish plant is feasible in the face of fierce competition.
The company had previously said it planned to acquire about 1.5 billion euros in debt and equity by next year to build 800m watt-hours of initial capacity at the Swedish plant, at an estimated total cost of close to 4 billion euros. Through the planned Polish joint venture, the start-up is attracting customers outside the transport industry.
A Northvolt spokesman said, "over the past year, we have seen a rapid increase in interest in complete battery solutions from several of our major customers. With this facility, we will be able to meet this demand.
