SMM10, 19 March: ecologists and other organizations visited the European Parliament in Brussels and demanded the closure of all active mines in Spain. With the support of Xabier Benito, a left-wing lawmaker, environmentalists organized a conference entitled "New Mining challenges in Europe". At the forum, they said Spain's booming mining activities over the past five years have endangered nature, cities and jobs. Civil society representatives from Cantabria Aragon Galicia Avila Salamanca Seville and Real also attended the event. Collectively, their communities are affected by pollution from mining operations such as lithium, tin, lead, tungsten, uranium and copper.
At the meeting, anti-mining advocates also discussed issues related to mining activities in Finland, where there has been a significant increase in mining activity, where France is reforming its mining rules, while Portugal has shown a trend towards the reopening of old mines and the approval of new ones.
