SMM, Sept. 29-the United States has become the second largest exporter of scrap aluminum to Thailand in recent months, as the United States seeks an export market other than China, market sources said on Friday.
Thailand imported 11010 tons of waste aluminum in July and 9795 tons in August. According to customs data from these countries, U. S. exports of scrap metal to Japan or South Korea have not increased significantly so far this year. The United States exported 2160 tons of scrap metal to Japan in July and 1586 tons in August, a breakthrough compared with the first half of the year.
Us waste suppliers are trying to develop new export operations for zorba and twitch waste in Southeast Asia, according to a Japanese trader. In Southeast Asia, some markets have lower labour costs, which means they are more acceptable. The trader said scrap metal prices in the US were competitive, adding, "We turned to the US to look for sources of scrap copper because it was cost-effective".
Thai customs data show that Thailand imported an average of 50.43 baht (US $1.56) / kg of waste aluminum in July, compared with 52.56 baht / kg in August, based on CIF prices.
