SMM, Sept. 29: Alcoa and Australian trade unions on Friday ended a labor dispute that has led to a strike since Aug. 8.
"the 52-day strike dispute involving more than 1500 workers has finally come to an end, and AWU members have received satisfactory job security terms," Alcoa said in a statement.
The union said in a statement that the new agreement passed on Friday ensures that full-time workers in the factory will not be replaced by contract workers, hired workers, temporary workers or part-time workers. Alcoa said the revised EBA included a promise by Alcoa not to force employees to be laid off by outsourcing their jobs or replacing full-time employees with limited or temporary workers.
AWU said earlier that it represented 1600 workers at the Wagerup, Pinjarra and Kwinana alumina refineries, as well as at the Huntley and Willowdale bauxite mines. The three alumina refineries have an annual output of about 8.8 million tons. A small portion of this is used for domestic consumption and most of it is exported globally.
