Malaysia allows mining companies to apply for Peng Heng bauxite export license

SMM, Sept. 11: after nearly 32 months of shelving, the Malaysian government has decided to allow bauxite mining companies to apply for export approval for (AP), to allow exports to remain in Peng Heng's bauxite stocks.

The ban on bauxite came into effect only after local residents expressed concern about the pollution caused by irresponsible bauxite mining in the area, including excessive bauxite dust in the air and bauxite residue infiltrating into the water supply system.

Malaysia's ministers of water, land and natural resources, Xavier Jayakumar and Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, decided to start issuing export licenses during the meeting on Friday, according to local media reports. "We will set up a task force to prepare a new standard operating procedure for bauxite mining, transportation, inventory management and export," Xavier explained. Once the ban is lifted, all mining-related departments must sign a commitment to comply with all regulations to ensure that the Peng Heng bauxite industry operates in a sustainable manner.
