SMM8, 22 March: BHP Billiton, the world's largest mining company, revealed on Tuesday that the ore processing of Olympic Dam, the world's fifth-largest copper mine and the largest uranium mine in South Australia, is being shackled by a persistent technical problem.
BHP Billiton is pushing ahead with a $2.1 billion mine expansion plan. The committee is expected to make a final investment decision on the Olympic mining project by 2020.
The company plans to produce about 230000 tons of copper from the Olympic Dam by 2021, with a potential annual potential capacity of 450000 tons.
