Workers at Codelco's Chuquicamata copper mine went on strike and blocked the mine passage

SMM7: Codelco's Chuquicamata workers have blocked access to the mine, protesting the "improper dismissal" of two workers and preparing for future negotiations. Unions Nos. 1, 2 and 3 of the Chuquicamata Copper Mine, as well as Union (Antofagasta) 1 of Antofagasta, agreed to suspend operations on Monday morning.

After brief negotiations in December 2016, the company signed a 27-month labor agreement with six unions at the Chuquicamata mine, and Codelco's labour relations are now deteriorating again. The union had previously said that Codelco had announced that it would cut 1700 jobs at the Chuquicamata mine, and that Codelco, as a manager, had failed to give due consideration to the "social and economic impact of the layoff plan."

Chuquicamata copper mine reserves about 1333Mt, has a century of mining history, ore grade has been declining to 0.7%, the mine has been from the world's largest open-pit copper mining to underground copper mining.

Production: Codelco owns 100 per cent of the Chuquicamata mine, which produced 331000 tons of copper in 2017 and 1.734 million tons of copper that year by Codelco. The mine produced 70,000 tons of copper in the first quarter of 2018, up 17000 tons from the same period last year. The company had expected the mine to produce 427000 tons of copper for the whole of 2018.

Cost: Chuquicamata mine cash cost 111 c ≤ lb in 2017, well below Codelco's average cash cost of about 131.8 c/lb.

Congo Endorses Partnership to Revitalize Key Railway for Mineral Exports to Western Markets
According to foreign media reports, the Democratic Republic of Congo has formally endorsed a public-private partnership with Portuguese construction group Mota-Engil to rehabilitate its strategic national railway network. The infrastructure project focuses on renovating the dilapidated rail section passing through key Central African mining hubs, including Kolwezi, Tenke, and Lubumbashi, linking them directly across the border to Angola’s Port of Lobito on the Atlantic coast. The agreement forms a critical leg of the US-backed Lobito Corridor initiative, designed to shorten transit times and lower freight costs for essential energy-transition minerals exported to Western markets. Negotiating a long-term operating concession of up to 30 years, Mota-Engil in partnership with global trading firm Trafigura aims to establish seamless cross-border freight operations. The rail upgrade is positioned to reduce logistical bottlenecks across the Copperbelt, supporting the expansion of regional mining production while advancing diplomatic efforts to build resilient, Western-aligned mineral supply chains.

Copper 360 Reaches Key Milestone in $50M South African Mine Development, Shares Rise 10%
According to foreign media reports, JSE-listed copper producer Copper 360 has reached a major milestone in its $50 million underground development program at the Rietberg mine in South Africa's Northern Cape. Underground excavation has successfully passed the halfway mark of its 544-meter development target, setting the company on track to intersect its primary ore body on the 300 Level within the next 90 days. This progress marks a strategic shift for the mine as it transitions from capital-intensive waste development into revenue-generating hard-rock mining. Reaching the ore block will provide an immediate feed of copper-bearing material directly to the upgraded Modular Flotation Plant 2 (MFP2). The alignment between underground production and processing capacity is expected to ramp run-of-mine output up to approximately 700 tonnes per day, fully utilizing the plant's installed capacity and delivering higher feed grades alongside improved recoveries. To secure long-term operational flexibility, the company plans to concurrently extend the underground haulage decline down to the 350 Level. This move will open additional mining areas and support a sustained long-term production profile beyond the initial ramp-up phase. Investors responded enthusiastically to the development, driving Copper 360’s shares up by more than 10% on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange following the operational update. The project reinforces the company's efforts to establish a fully integrated copper production footprint in the region.

Freeport Grasberg Production Resumption Continues to Advance, Expected to Return to Near Full Production by the End of 2027
During Freeport-McMoRan’s Q2 earnings call, the company disclosed that the block cave underground project resumption of production at the Grasberg mine in Indonesia is progressing in line with expectations, with ramp-up at Production Block 2 and Block 3 proceeding according to the plan formulated in April. Production at Grasberg was partially suspended earlier due to the September 2025 wet ore inflow incident in the underground mine, after which the company initiated cleaning, repairs, and phased production resumptions. According to Freeport, repair work at the Grasberg Block Cave was completed in Q1 2026, and production resumption ramp-up began in March, reaching planned operating levels in Q2. The company currently expects Grasberg capacity to recover to approximately 65% in H2 2026, further improve to around 80% by mid-2027, and plans to approach full capacity by the end of 2027. On production, Freeport expects the Grasberg mine to produce a cumulative total of approximately 6.8 billion pounds of copper from 2026 to 2030, averaging about 1.4 billion pounds per year. Copper production is expected to rebound significantly after 2027 as the Block Cave capacity gradually resumes. Additionally, Freeport noted that Grasberg still has expansion potential, with the Kucing Liar project under development. Ramp-up is expected to begin around 2030, with an expected incremental copper capacity addition of 750 million pounds per year once full production is achieved.
