Daily crude steel output at CISA member mills inches up in mid-Feb

The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) reported that crude steel output across major mills in China averaged 2.32 million mt per day in the second ten days of April, up 2.21% from early April and up 19.1% from the same period a year ago.

Xintian Steel Group Zhasan Iron & Steel was required to eliminate all of its capacity to comply with Tianjin’s steel industry policies following the issuance of Work Plan to Fight and Prevent Pollution in 2019 on July 3, 2018. As of September 17, 2020, Zhasan Iron & Steel has shut down completely, resulting in a daily loss of 8,000 mt of pig iron output. The mill mainly produced steel billets and had two 1,260 m³ blast furnaces and two 120 mt converters, with annual steel capacity of 3 million mt.

China's output of hot-rolled coils and plates is likely to remain high in September, as steelmakers recover from maintenance and high profits encourage mills to produce.

Operating rates of blast furnaces (BFs) at Chinese steelmakers extended declines as decreased profits prompted steel mills to conduct maintenance.

SMM data showed that HRC stocks across social warehouses and steelmakers increased 2.3% in the week ended July 23 to 3.86 million mt, smaller than a 3.72% gain in the previous week.

Inventories of steel rebar across Chinese steelmakers and social warehouses continued to climb this week, as markets in central, east and south-west China have not shaken off the impact of the rainy season. But consumption in south China saw a resurgence as the wet season ends, which is strong evidence of local stepping-up construction work. 

The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) reported Saturday that crude steel output across major mills in China averaged 2.14 million mt per day in the last 10 days of June, barely changed from the record high level seen in the middle of June.

Major Chinese steelmakers continued to ramp up production in early June, after the country’s steel output hit a record high in the previous month.
