Rio Tinto Launches New 1.1km Alumina Conveyor in Canada, Boosting Efficiency and Reducing Emissions
[SMM Aluminum Express News] Rio Tinto has launched a new 1.1 km alumina conveyor at its Kitimat smelter in British Columbia, Canada. The system will transport approximately 800,000 tons of alumina per year, ensuring a more reliable supply of raw material for aluminum production. Designed to operate for 50 years, the sealed conveyor replaces 1960s-era infrastructure. It improves operational efficiency by allowing recovered alumina to be reused and reduces particulate emissions by around 40% through a sealed pipe design and advanced dust collection systems.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] Novelis and Infinitum Renew Recycling Partnership, Strengthen Supply and Decarbonization Goals
Novelis and Infinitum have renewed their aluminium recycling partnership, shifting focus from pilot projects to scale and supply stability. The collaboration will expand recycling systems to strengthen recycled aluminium supply and support low-carbon production. The move also aligns with Novelis’ “3x30” targets to raise recycled content to 75% and reduce emissions intensity to below 3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne by 2030. Amid supply chain volatility, scaling recycling helps secure feedstock, manage costs and advance decarbonisation goals.
