Report: China ranks 1st in global ship orders in Jan

SHANGHAI, Feb 14 (SMM) – China remained the first worldwide in total new ship orders in January, as it received more than half of the global ship orders, according to the data compiled by industry tracker Clarkson Research Institute on February 13. 

Chinese shipyards clinched new orders of 57 vessels worth 1.08 million compensated gross tonnage (CGT) in January, accounting for 50.5% of the world’s market share.

South Korean shipbuilding companies took the second spot with 580,000 CGT to construct 12 vessels last month. 

Global-wide orders in January totalled 2.14 million CGT, down 40% from the 3.58 million CGT in January 2018, and compared with the monthly average 2.48 million CGT for last year.
