Weekly Macro Report January 22, 2019

The dollar marched higher on Tuesday after a report on the U.S. services industry in August reinforced the view that the economy was not in recession, while the euro and rate-sensitive Japanese yen continued to tumble.

The dollar eased from a 20-year high on Friday after data showed the pace of U.S. hiring rose more than expected in August, but wage growth moderated and unemployment ticked higher, giving the Federal Reserve some wiggle room when it raises interest rates later this month.

The dollar index and the euro both slipped on Thursday in choppy trading as investors waited on a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Friday for further clues about the ongoing pace of the U.S. central bank’s rate hikes.

The dollar rallied on Friday but was set for a weekly drop as traders weighed improving U.S. inflation data against comments from Federal Reserve officials who cautioned the battle against rising prices is far from over.

The dollar eased against most major currencies on Thursday as support from the Federal Reserve’s hawkish messaging subsided a day before hotly anticipated U.S. jobs data, even as pessimism about a protracted recession ebbed.

On August 1, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), together with the National Development and Reform Commission as well as the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, issued the action plan for carbon peaking in the industrial sector.

The dollar was slightly lower on Wednesday against a basket of major currencies after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 75 basis points, as was widely anticipated, but noted signs of a softening economy.

The dollar retraced from a 20-year high and the euro broke back above parity, following a brief dip below, after data on Wednesday showed U.S. consumer price inflation surged to a more than 40-year high in June.
