China to ban new project expansions in steel, cement, flat glass

SHANGHAI, Jan 16 (SMM) – To consolidate cuts of overcapacity and to upgrade industries, China will ban any expansion of new projects across the steel, cement, and flat glass sectors in 2019, said Xin Guobin, vice-minister of Industry and Information Technology, at a press conference on Wednesday January 16.

Newly-built aluminium capacity will also face strict controls in 2019. Technological transformations and equipment upgrades in manufacturing will be prioritised, said Mr Xin.
