Short supplies of copper scrap are likely to depress the operating rate across copper rod producers that use scrap as raw materials

SHANGHAI, Jul 20 (SMM) – Short supplies of copper scrap are likely to depress the operating rate across Chinese copper rod producers that use scrap as raw materials in July, SMM expects.

The operating rate in July is estimated at 47.17%, down 19.15 percentage points from June. The rate in June dipped 2.36 percentage points from May and registered at 66.33%.

Copper prices fell and the spread between prices of copper cathode and copper scrap began to narrow in July. This held sellers back from selling. Concerned over shortages of raw materials, some copper rod producers that used scrap stopped accepting new orders.

SMM research found that some producers have suspended production of late.
