Some 2,935 mt of copper scrap imports received the green light in the 14th batch of approvals for restricted solid scrap imports

SHANGHAI, Jun 19 (SMM) – Some 2,935 mt of copper scrap imports received the green light in the 14th batch of approvals for restricted solid scrap imports, which was released on Tuesday June 19 by the solid waste management centre of China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

Four companies involved in copper scrap imports made it to the approved list in this round. Two are located in Foshan, Guangdong province; one in Taizhou, Zhejiang province; and the last one is in Tianjin, SMM learned.

This round's approved volume compared with 2,805 mt of copper scrap imports in the 13th batch of approvals.

The 14th batch brought the total approved copper scrap imports this year to 488,000 mt, down nearly 83.8% from a total of 11 batches last year.

It remains unclear if more approvals will be issued this year.

Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Waters off Iquique, Chile; Impact on Nearby Copper Mines Yet to Be Confirmed
According to a report from the National Seismological Center (CSN) of the University of Chile, at 00:11 local time on October 14 in Chile (11:11 Beijing time), a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the waters about 18 kilometers southwest of Iquique, with a focal depth of 47 kilometers. The Tarapacá Region, where Iquique is located, hosts two large copper mines, Collahuasi and Quebrada Blanca (QB), which are situated approximately 185 kilometers and 240 kilometers southeast of Iquique, respectively, and both produce copper concentrates. In addition, Collahuasi operates a copper concentrate loading terminal at Patache, about 65 kilometers south of Iquique. The actual impact of this earthquake on production and loading remains to be further disclosed by the enterprises.
