Delivery vehicle to favour LFP battery on lower costs and longer durability

Lithium iron phosphate battery is likely to be more competitive than ternary battery and lithium manganese oxide battery for delivery vehicles on its relatively lower costs and longer durability.

SHANGHAI, May 28 (SMM) – Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery is likely to be more competitive than ternary battery and lithium manganese oxide battery for delivery vehicles on its relatively lower costs and longer durability, SMM believes.

LFP batteries are able to survive throughout the overall driving range of a delivery vehicle of about 250,000 km in eight years, whereas ternary and lithium manganese oxide batteries would have to be replaced once with costs of over 50,000 yuan.

Currently, the battery packs of ternary, LFP and lithium manganese oxide are mostly priced at the same level of 1.4 yuan/wh. For delivery vehicles which would see much longer driving distance than passenger cars, LFP batteries present cost advantages.

In fact, the prices of LFP batteries may go down further given the relatively low prices of iron phosphate and falling prices of lithium carbonate.

In addition, the voltage platform for LFP batteries is at 3.0-3.5V, compared with 3.0-4.2V of ternary batteries. For batteries with high voltage platform, the sharp change of voltage following a sudden brake is more likely to render breakdowns.

The voltage platform of manganese oxide batteries sits between LFP and ternary batteries.
