Consumption of chemical-grade silicon is likely to remain sluggish in the short term given low operating rates across organosilicon plants

SHANGHAI, May 23 (SMM) – Consumption of chemical-grade silicon is likely to remain sluggish in the short term given low operating rates across organosilicon plants, SMM believes.

This weak demand depressed production enthusiasm across silicon plants. Few plants in Baoshan and Dehong in Yunnan province, Aba and Leshan in Sichuan province have resumed production as electricity charges in some areas have not been adjusted for the rainy season. Many plants also undertook maintenance works on their furnaces.

Chemical-grade silicon 421# traded at 14,300-14,800 yuan/mt in Kunming, Yunnan province, on Wednesday May 23.
