China’s alumina imports are likely to decrease after March volumes hit a 16-year low

SHANGHAI, Apr 30 (SMM) – China’s alumina imports are likely to decrease after March volumes hit a 16-year low.

China imported 8,145 mt of alumina last month, customs data showed. Imports for the first three months shrank 80% from the same period last year and amounted to 184,905 mtr.

Non-metallurgical grade alumina accounted for most of the imports in March, while the volume of metallurgical grade was zero, customs data showed.

SMM believes that tight global supplies and a bigger price gap between Chinese and overseas alumina will drive China to import less and export more.

China's exports of alumina amounted to 210,000 mt as of Friday April 27, SMM learned.
