Development in cathode materials is likely to drive the development of new-energy cars as cathode materials determine battery performance.

SHANGHAI, Apr 13 (SMM) – Development in the cathode materials industry is likely to drive the development of new-energy vehicles as cathode materials determine battery performance, said vice president of Yibin Libode New Materials' technology centre, Wu Ceng.

At the SMM CoLiNi Summit on Friday April 13 in Quzhou, Zhejiang province, Wu said that the industry remains focused on researching and developing high-nickel ternary cathode materials.

Comparing battery materials used by major manufacturers of new-energy vehicles, Wu highlighted NCA ternary material in lithium-ion batteries. This material, used by Tesla, has the highest density of energy at the lowest cost, Wu cited remarks by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

According to Wu, the distance per charge for electric vehicles is forecast to exceed 300 km, while the energy density for lithium-ion batteries is forecast to reach 300 Wh/kg.
