SHANGHAI, Mar 20 (SMM)-Driven by adequate supplies and a slower-than-expected recovery of consumption, prices of low-grade silicon oxide fell this week despite low operation rates in south China.

With fewer plants operating in south China during the dry season, plants in north China maintained higher operating rates. Additional capacity was also released this year and this further increased the output of low-grade silicon oxide.

Slower-than-expected resumption of downstream consumption also accounted for the decline in prices of low-grade silicon oxide. Downstream consumers such as aluminium alloy plants received fewer orders after CNY, and depleted their inventories slowly.

Between December 2017 to January 2018, some plants restocked actively as they expected prices of silicon to increase after CNY. As a result, current demand is affected and transactions were flat.

Most consumers took a pessimistic stance on prices in the short term as more silicon plants resumed operations after the dry season, driving up supply.

Supply of non-oxygen #553 silicon was relatively tight. It is likely that prices of non-oxygen #553 silicon will remain firm in the short term and support prices of low-grade silicon oxide. Their price gap is expected at 200 yuan/mt or higher.
