Macro Roundup

SHANGHAI, Mar 16 (SMM) – This is a roundup of global macroeconomic news last night and what is expected today.

Last night

The US dollar returned to stand above 90, following remarks from President Donald Trump's newly-appointed top economic advisor Larry Kudlow.

Most nonferrous metals weakened. SHFE nickel and copper dropped about 1%. SHFE tin edged down slightly, while aluminium, zinc and lead inched up. Given China's growing supplies and a potential trade war, LME aluminium tumbled to a three-month low. LME nickel and copper slid about 1%, while zinc and lead rose slightly

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits in the US dropped 4,000 to 226,000 for the week ended March 10. It was the 158th consecutive week that claims remained below the 300,000 threshold, reflecting a strong labour market

The US import price index in February rose 0.4% on a monthly basis, more than the expected 0.2%.

Day ahead

February’s data of the eurozone's consumer price index (CPI), the US industrial production, and the Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index are key factors to watch today.

Buoyed by aggressive remarks from US new economic adviser Larry Kudlow, the US dollar rose back to 90 and is likely to remain rangebound today.

Base metals are expected to edge down in the short term with resistance from a stronger US dollar and a potential trade war.

Yingkou Jianfa Shenghai Phase I 300,000 mt Copper Cathode Project Smelting Furnace Starts Production, Pyrometallurgy System Enters Furnace Drying Stage
At 9:58 am on 12 September, the core smelting furnace of the polymetallic recovery project's pyrometallurgy system at Yingkou Jianfa Shenghai Nonferrous Chemical Co., Ltd. was successfully ignited, officially entering the furnace drying stage and marking a key step toward full-line commissioning and production. Public information shows that the Yingkou Jianfa Shenghai polymetallic complex gold-silver ore comprehensive recovery technology upgrade, relocation and expansion project uses copper concentrates as its main raw material, with an overall planned capacity of 600,000 mt/year of copper cathode. It is being built in two phases, with capacity of 300,000 mt/year in each phase. Phase one is designed to produce 300,000 mt/year of copper cathode and 1.18 million mt/year of sulphuric acid, supported by smelting, converting, anode refining, electrolysis, slag beneficiation and precious metal recovery systems. Following the ignition, the project will carry out standardised furnace drying and hot-state integrated commissioning across the entire system, verifying equipment, instrumentation, interlocks and automatic control systems. The project has not yet formally started raw material feed and production. Once furnace drying and system commissioning are completed, it will move forward with bringing the phase-one 300,000 mt/year copper cathode capacity into production. If the project is successfully commissioned, it will increase copper smelting capacity in north-east China and further boost China's demand for copper concentrate raw materials.
