A cut in steel production and a decline in downstream consumption are likely to affect steel prices in China, following new, local policies to combat the heavily polluted weather, SMM learned.

SHANGHAI, Mar 12 (SMM) – A cut in steel production and a decline in downstream consumption are likely to affect steel prices in China, following new, local policies to combat the heavily polluted weather, SMM learned.

In Tianjin, Tangshan, and Handan, steel output is set to decline as more steel mills face shutdowns. It is unclear when such measures would ease or end.

As part of the region's efforts to ease air pollution, downstream plants in Beijing were urged to cut production from March 12 to 14. In Tianjin, downstream plants were required to reduce air pollutant emissions by at least 50%.
