SMM believes that the 10% import tariff on aluminium signed by US President Donald Trump will have little impact on China’s aluminium market.

SHANGHAI, Mar 9 (SMM) – SMM believes that the 10% import tariff on aluminium signed by US President Donald Trump will have little impact on China’s aluminium market.

This is because aluminium strip and foil account for 95.7% of China’s total aluminium exports to the US, and these products are expected to face much heavier levies, at 50-170%, through anti-dumping and countervailing duties.

Just last week, the US Department of Commerce determined that Chinese aluminium foil exports were sold for “less than fair value” in the US and that China provided “unfair” subsidies to its producers. When the US International Trade Commission makes a final decision on the case in April, anti-dumping and countervailing duties would be levied.

For aluminium strip, the final decision by the US Department of Commerce on countervailing and anti-dumping investigations is likely to be in April and July this year, respectively.
