SMM Morning Comments

SHANGHAI, Feb 28 (SMM) -

Copper: A stronger US dollar drove LME copper lower towards the 60-day moving average, but prices are likely to rise in the medium term as downstream consumption recovers and Chinese scrap imports decline. We see LME copper to trade at $7,000-7,070/mt and the SHFE 1804 contract at 52,500-53,100 yuan/mt today. Spot discounts are seen getting smaller as sellers held up.

Aluminium: We expect LME aluminium to stay firm and trade at $2,140-2,167/mt today, as the growth of LME inventory halted. The SHFE aluminium contract is expected to be rangebound around the five- and 10-day moving averages, trading at 14,200-14,400 yuan/mt. Spot discounts are seen at 220-180 yuan/mt.

Zinc: We see LME zinc to consolidate at highs while pressure remains on base metals in general from US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell’s testimony. LME zinc is expected to trade at $3,465-3,515/mt today, with SHFE zinc at 26,250-26,700 yuan/mt. In the physical market, the 0# common brand is set to trade at a discount of 100-80 yuan/mt and Shuangyan brand is set to trade at a discount of 70-40 yuan/mt.

Nickel: Tight supply of nickel pig iron and a slight rise in ore prices would give support to nickel, as we expect the SHFE 1805 contract to trade at 103,800-105,800 yuan/mt today. Spot prices are expected at 103,000-105,000 yuan/mt.

Tin: We expect LME tin to remain rangebound with support at $21,000/mt today and SHFE tin to trade at 147,000-148,500 yuan/mt with resistance from moving averages. In the physical market, spot prices are seen to trade at 145,500-147,500 yuan/mt with high inventories.

Lead: The stronger US dollar gave pressure to LME lead, which stayed around the five- and 60-day moving averages overnight. We expect it to test the support at the 60-day moving average level. SHFE lead performed no better and touched the support at the five- and 20-day moving averages. We expect it to continue to test the support levels today.

South Korea Secures $1 Billion Glencore Financing Deal to Strengthen Copper Supply
The Export-Import Bank of Korea will provide $1 billion in working-capital financing to Glencore, with the agreement tied to stable copper supply for Korean companies over the life of the loan. The financing, equivalent to around 1.4 trillion won, is intended to strengthen South Korea’s copper procurement base at a time when the country remains heavily dependent on imported raw materials. In return, Glencore has agreed to maintain a stable flow of copper to Korean buyers. Copper is becoming increasingly important to South Korea’s industrial and energy strategy. The metal is widely used across electricity networks, telecommunications, construction, machinery and transportation, while demand is also rising from artificial intelligence data centres and clean-energy infrastructure. The agreement highlights the growing role of state-backed financing in securing access to strategic minerals. Rather than relying solely on conventional commercial procurement, South Korea is using policy financing to reinforce supply security for industries that are increasingly sensitive to raw-material availability. Glencore’s global mining, smelting and trading footprint gives the company significant reach across the copper supply chain. Its ability to source and market material from multiple regions makes it a strategically valuable partner for countries seeking to reduce exposure to supply disruptions. From a copper-market perspective, the deal reflects intensifying competition for reliable long-term access to copper. As governments place greater emphasis on economic security, supply-chain resilience and advanced manufacturing, similar financing arrangements could become more common and strengthen competition for available copper units outside traditional spot and term-contract markets.

Consecutive Price Cuts Boost Transactions, Shanghai Spot Copper Premiums Center Shifts Down [SMM Shanghai Spot Copper]
[Shanghai spot copper] Looking ahead to tomorrow, buying sentiment in the Shanghai region continued to recover during the day, but market transactions remained dominated by flows between traders. Although some downstream players made just-in-time procurement, actual demand growth was relatively limited, and end-use consumption has not shown a significant improvement. Quotes for standard-quality copper were continuously lowered from a premium of around 350 yuan/mt in the early session to approximately 260 yuan/mt, after which transactions increased, reflecting the market's still low acceptance of high-premium cargoes. Suppliers still have the willingness to lower quotes to facilitate transactions. On the other hand, available cargoes of high-quality copper and non-registered copper were relatively scarce, coupled with the inter-month back price spread maintained at 310-350 yuan/mt, providing some support to quotes for certain brands. In summary, against the backdrop of traders' purchases providing some demand support but limited downstream procurement growth and strong willingness of suppliers to sell, spot copper prices against the SHFE 2609 contract are expected to remain at a premium tomorrow, with the overall center likely to continue shifting slightly downward.
