South32 Reports 2% Rise in Q1 Copper Output, Driven by Higher-Grade Ore Mining
Diversified miner South32 reported on Monday that copper production rose 2% in Q1 of fiscal 2027, driven by planned mining of higher-grade ore, though output fell slightly short of market expectations. After excluding the aluminum portfolio, the copper business contributed more than half of South32's fiscal 2026 earnings, making it the miner's primary cash source. Supply constraints and rising demand from AI and renewable energy infrastructure have pushed copper prices to record highs this year, enhancing the metal's investment appeal. The miner reported attributable copper production of 18,700 mt from its interest in the Sierra Gorda project in Chile for the quarter ended September 30, up from 18,300 mt a year earlier.
