Rare earth prices in China returned to weakness in August after big gains of medium and light rare earth prices in the middle of the year.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 31 (SMM) – Rare earth prices in China returned to weakness in August after big gains of medium and light rare earth prices in the middle of the year.

How will rare earth prices perform next year?

China might cut mining quotas of lanthanum and cerium products while raising those of praseodymium and neodymium products so as to adjust supply & demand conditions of rare earth products.

Rare earth supply might shrink, which will offer support to rare earth prices.

Overall, Chinese rare earth market is still in a surplus at present, said Hu Yan, Senior Minor Metal Analyst at SMM. Tougher government crackdowns on illegal mining and environmental checks did help curtail rare earth production, though. As such, rare earth prices are in an overall upward track this year, especially light rare earth represented by praseodymium-nedymium, Hu explained.

Besides, stockpiling by State Reserve Burea in May also contributed to price gains, Hu added.
