The Chilean government rejected on Monday a controversial $2.5-billion copper and iron project proposed by privately-held Andes Iron.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 22 (SMM) – The Chilean government rejected on Monday a controversial $2.5-billion copper and iron project proposed by privately-held Andes Iron, though the company vowed to appeal.

The project will produce 12 million tonnes of iron and 150,000 tonnes of copper annually.

BHP Billiton: Copper Supply Shortage to Come Ahead of Schedule

Chilean environmental protection minister Marcelo Mena indicated that the project would likely have a significant impact on a Humboldt penguin reserve.
