Shanxi Steps Up Environmental Crackdowns on Bauxite Mines, SMM Confirms

Rumor said that all bauxite mines in Shanxi that lack production licenses were ordered to close during August 14-September 14.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 17 (SMM) – Rumor said that all bauxite mines in Shanxi that lack production licenses were ordered to close during August 14-September 14. Another rumor said all bauxite mines in the province, whether they have production licenses or not, would shut down during the 19th NPC meeting this autumn and National Games from August 27 to September 8.

Bauxite Shortage Affects Production at Two Alumina Producers in Shanxi, SMM Says

The first rumor is true, SMM confirmed. The second rumor, however, may be exaggerated, since no local mines have received such notice, SMM learned.

Bauxite shortage has already affected production at two local large alumina producers, SMM found. So, local alumina prices showed signs of rising. However, whether alumina prices will rise across the board will partly depend on the amount and sales prices of alumina from Shandong Weiqiao Group.

Cost side, tightening invoice supervision across multiple regions stuck, leading to difficulties in compliant procurement and high tax burdens. Enterprise profits came under pressure and even turned negative, prompting some producers to cut or suspend production. Demand side, the downstream continued its weak off-season pattern, with demand from end-users such as OEMs pulling back. Market transactions were dominated by rigid restocking.
