SHANGHAI, Jul. 4 (SMM) – SHFE 1709 zinc opened at RMB 22,955/mt today and then edged down with entry of shorts, hovering around RMB 22,850/mt. With retreat of longs, zinc prices plummeted, and stopped falling at RMB 22,700/mt. In the afternoon, SHFE 1709 zinc hovered around RMB 22,720/mt and closed at RMB 22,775/mt, up RMB 100/mt or 0.44%. SHFE 1708 zinc rose RMB 140/mt or 0.61%.Trading volumes on SHFE 1708 zinc decreased 5,790 to 450,000 lots, and positions decreased 5,678 to 238,000. SHFE 1708 zinc will hover at highs this evening.

[SMM Zinc Morning Comment] Overnight, the most-traded SHFE zinc 2605 contract opened at 23,680 yuan/mt. In early trading, SHFE zinc briefly rose to a high of 23,685 yuan/mt, after which bears added to their positions and SHFE zinc fluctuated downward all the way, hitting a low of 23,440 yuan/mt near the close. It finally closed down at 23,455 yuan/mt, down 275 yuan/mt, or 1.16%. Trading volume fell to 39,416 lots, and open interest increased by 10,738 lots to 91,209 lots.
