(Kitco News) - The gold market was able to resist a fairly optimistic Federal monetary policy statement, but was unable to hold its daily gains after what appeared to be hawkish comments from the Fed Chair Janet Yellen.

While gold had been steadily giving up its early morning gains as the market digested the latest Federal Reserve statement and economic projections, the yellow metal attracted renewed selling pressure as Yellen shrugged off weak inflation concerns.

Gold prices fell to session lows following Yellen’s hawkish inflation comments. August gold futures last traded at $1,260 an ounce, down 0.68% on the day.

While acknowledging that prices pressures are currently weaker than expected, Yellen said that conditions are in place for inflation to eventually pick up.

Her comments come as the Consumer Price Index showed annualized inflation rising 1.7%, its lowest increase since May 2015.

“It’s important to not overreact to a few readings,” she said.

Yellen said that because of current economic conditions, the committee anticipates further interest rate increases this year and next.

“I think it is prudent to move in a gradual way to remove accommodation,” she said. “We want to keep the expansion on a stable path.”

Yellen added that the risk is if they leave rates too low for too long, it could overheat the U.S. economy and the Federal Reserve would have to act aggressively, raising the risk of pushing the nation into a recession.

Along with a continued rise in interest rates, Yellen said that the central bank has prepared a plan to shrink its balance sheet, removing further accommodation in monetary policy.

“If the economy evolves as we expect, we could implement the plan really soon,” she said.

Burkina Faso inaugurates its first national gold refinery
[SMM Gold Flash] Burkina Faso inaugurated RAFFINOR-BF in Ouagadougou on 28 September, the government and mines ministry said. The ministry reported that officials observed the refining of initial gold bars during a tour of the plant. It puts the first phase’s theoretical refining capacity at 164 tonnes a year; an additional phase would raise that to 515 tonnes a year. The government says the facility cost about CFA11 billion and was financed mainly through the state precious-metals company SONASP and private partners. The opening marks a step in Burkina Faso’s effort to refine industrial and artisanal gold domestically and retain more processing value. Capacity is a design figure, however: neither the inauguration nor the observed first bars establishes annual throughput, sustained operation or sufficient supply. Feedstock collection, refinery utilisation and the proposed expansion remain the figures to watch.

GoldStone extends interest waiver on gold loan through year-end
[SMM Gold Flash] GoldStone Resources said on 29 September that Asian Investment Management Services agreed to extend the interest-free period on its existing gold loan through 31 December 2026. The lender also irrevocably waived its entitlement to interest from 1 January through 31 December 2026. A waiver announced in June had been due to expire on 30 September. The loan still matures on 30 June 2027, and its other terms are unchanged. The extension eases near-term financing pressure as GoldStone invests in its Homase mine in Ghana. It provides no new cash and does not forgive the loan principal. The announcement gives no new production figure or revised mine plan; Homase’s operating performance and repayment of the loan remain the points to watch.
