Profit Shrinks Dramatically at Aluminum Smelters in China, SMM Reports

Profit at Chinese aluminum smelters shrank sharply due to falling aluminum prices and rising alumina prices, SMM learned.

SHANGHAI, Jun. 12 (SMM) – Profit at Chinese aluminum smelters shrank sharply due to falling aluminum prices and rising alumina prices, SMM learned.

The average profit was just 450 yuan/tonne at smelters in SMM’s survey sample in the week ending June 9.

Further Declines in Store for LME Aluminum This Week, SMM Predicts

The average spot aluminum price slid 82 yuan/tonne on a weekly basis to 13,618 yuan/tonne, while alumina prices rose to 2,700 yuan/tonne. 

The Bohai-Rim Steam-Coal Price Index (BSPI) dropped for nine consecutive weeks.
