China’s aluminum output rose 21.6% year-on-year to 3.17 million tonnes in May, and will continue growing on a yearly basis in June, SMM predicts.

SHANGHAI, Jun. 9 (SMM) –China’s aluminum output rose 21.6% year-on-year to 3.17 million tonnes in May, and will continue growing on a yearly basis in June, SMM predicts.

China produced 15.21 million tonnes of aluminum during the first five months of this year, up 22.0% from a year ago, according to SMM data. Annualized aluminum capacity in operation totaled 37.36 million tonnes nationwide in May, up 6.63 million tonnes from the same period last year.

Baotou Aluminum put 800,000-tpy new aluminum capacity on stream. Gansu Dongxing Aluminum and Yunnan Qujing Aluminum, among others, resumed production. These left market supply still plentiful.

As of June 1, aluminum stocks in domestic five major markets totaled 1.19 million tonnes, up 766,000 tonnes from a year ago.

Aluminum output will continue growing, given large-scale commissioning of new and restarted capacity and no decline in operational capacity. SMM sees China’s aluminum output rising 20.1% year-on-year to 3.09 million tonnes in June, which will potentially further push up aluminum stocks.
