TEHRAN (Scrap Register): The imports of Scrap metals mainly, ferrous scrap from Iraq and Afghanistan to Iran has been banned by the customs authority of the country, as per the request from Trade Promotions Organization.
The main reason for banning the scrap from these countries are mainly, they could be infected with radioactive materials or chemicals and it may also contain unexploded munition.
Iran is not a big importer of Scrap, they electric arc furnace-based steel industry mainly depend on the domestic suppliers for the main component sponge iron and about 10%-15% of scrap feedstock. A small portion is imported from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and the UAE.
The scrap imports to Iran is expected to increase as the domestic supply growth is not comparable to steel production in the country.
