CME Group Metals volume shoots up during April

CME Group has reported that metals volume averaged 548,000 contracts per day in April this year, up 25 percent from 440,000 the same month in 2016.

NEW YORK (Scrap Register): CME Group has reported that metals volume averaged 548,000 contracts per day in April this year, up 25 percent from 440,000 the same month in 2016.

The metals volume was also up sequentially from an average of 491,000 contracts daily in March. Gold futures and options average daily volume rose 30% year-on-year to 289,000 contracts, while daily silver futures volume climbed 18% from a year ago to 112,000 contracts. 

The exchange operator also reports 24% year-on-year growth for base metals, including copper futures and options, which averaged nearly 120,000 contracts per day. 

On a rolling three-month-average basis, daily metals volume averaged 519,000 contracts for the period ending with April. This was up from the comparable periods ending in March (512,000) and February (466,000), although down from the three-month period ending in January (534,000).
