The project, with total investment of $658 million, includes mine, smelter and power plant, and the project is estimated to process 1.80 million tonnes of ore annually, and will apply for export quota at maximum amount after Indonesian government’s new export policy, which have given export permission to two companies, namely Antam and Eastern Special Steel.
Construction of four 33,000-KVA RKEF units, which feature closed circuit, energy-saving and environmental-friendliness, is going smoothly, with total capacity of 30,000 tonnes (Ni content) and grade (Ni 10-15%). The unit, with low power consumption, is expected to save 500-1,000 kwh in unit production of ferronickel.
Construction of those facilities also face some challenges, such as complex terrain in Obi Island, construction suspension during the rainy season, high logistics costs and labor shortages.
