BHP Billiton has suspended operation at Escondida copper mine which is located in northern Chile due to a planned strike on Thursday, wenhua.com reported.

SHANGHAI, Feb. 9 (SMM) - BHP Billiton has suspended operation at Escondida copper mine which is located in northern Chile due to a planned strike on Thursday, wenhua.com reported.

BHP Billiton said it would cease production during the strike for safety of the 80 workers designated by the government. Global copper supply may be affected as the strike may last for a long time.

The strike is expected to begin at local time 8:00 am on February 9(1100 GMT).
