SINGAPORE (Scrap Register): ASEAN hot rolled cold (HRC) steel import prices (CFR ASEAN port) climbed by $7 a ton to $511 a ton during the week ended January 20, as per the latest figures released by The Steel Index.

According to TSI, ASEAN HRC index finished the week at $511 a ton, up $7 a ton from last Friday. With the Lunar New Year approaching, trading activity was very slow, especially as buyers and sellers have opposite views about the price direction after the holiday.

Producers were optimistic, keeping their asking prices firm or even slightly increasing them. Mills’ offers for HRC SAE grade were heard this week between $520-525/t for material from China, at around $560/t from S. Korea, $545/t from Taiwan and $585/t from Japan.

Traders with positions of Indian material successfully concluded deals with Vietnamese end-users between $505-510/t for SAE grade, while Chinese traders were heard to have booked positions in the $510- 515/t range for the same grade. All prices quoted on a CFR ASEAN port basis.
