LONDON (Scrap Register): The main sea freight index at Baltic Exchange for ships carrying dry bulk commodities fell to 1,986 points on Tuesday mainly due to lower cape index.
The Baltic Dry Index, which provides an assessment of the price of moving the major raw materials – such as coal, iron ore and grain – by sea by taking in 23 shipping routes measured on a time charter basis, down further by 10 points to 1,186 points on Tuesday.
The BDI’s ascent has garnered extra steam since the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States. Trump’s economic policies include increased infrastructure spending, which will boost raw material demand from the world’s largest economy.
These raw materials will need to be shipped into the US, and this could provide a welcome boost to the BDI, which is still well off of its record high of 11,793 points in 2008.

Eldorado’s Skouries Copper-Gold Mine Completes Grid Energization Ahead of Q4 Commercial Production
Eldorado Gold announced on September 28 that its Skouries copper-gold mine in northern Greece has successfully completed permanent grid energization, following final inspection, testing and approval by the Greek transmission authority. The permanent connection replaces temporary on-site power used during early commissioning and provides the long-term electricity infrastructure required for continued plant ramp-up. Eldorado continues to target commercial production in Q4 2026. GlobeNewswire Skouries produced its first copper-gold concentrate on September 8, with crushing, grinding, flotation and concentrate/tailings thickening systems already operating. With permanent power now secured, attention shifts to increasing processing rates and achieving steady-state operations. The mine has an initial life of approximately 20 years and is expected to produce an average 67 million lb of copper annually, equivalent to about 30,400 tonnes, alongside 140,000 oz of gold over its mine life. The project represents one of Europe’s more significant new sources of copper supply, making its Q4 commercial-production milestone and subsequent ramp-up worth monitoring.

South Africa’s Human Rights Commission Pushes for Mandatory Cashless Copper Scrap Transactions
South Africa could further tighten regulation of its copper scrap trade after the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) recommended mandatory cashless payments for all copper scrap transactions, with electronic payment records retained for at least five years. In a new policy brief released this week, the commission argued that cash reduces transaction traceability and allows stolen copper cable and other infrastructure metals to move more easily through apparently legitimate scrap channels. It therefore proposed amending the Second-Hand Goods Act to explicitly require cashless copper scrap trading. BusinessTech The SAHRC also recommended that the Financial Intelligence Centre monitor suspicious transaction patterns and report them to SAPS and ITAC, while urging the government to move forward with the proposed Second-Hand Goods Amendment Bill targeting cable theft and illicit scrap trading. Importantly, the cashless requirement is currently a policy recommendation rather than a newly implemented regulation. If incorporated into legislation, however, it would increase traceability and compliance requirements for South African copper scrap collectors, recyclers, traders and exporters.
