Another 20 Mining Firms May Face Suspension in the Philippines

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced September 27 that is has recommended the suspension of 20 mining firms.

SHANGHAI, Sep. 27 (SMM) - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced September 27 that is has recommended the suspension of 20 mining firms after completing industry-wide audit of mining operations in the country.

Output at the 20 mines account for 55.5 percent of annual output in the Philippines, said Leo Jasareno. And the 20 mines were given seven days to respond to the findings of inspections, said Environment Secretary Gina Lopez.

According to SMM data, nickel ore inventories at seven major Chinese ports dropped in the week ending Sep. 23.

In the latest edition of China Base Metal Briefing (CBMB), SMM expects nickel ore prices to rise due to tight supply, rising high-grade NPI prices, and stock-piling demand before the monsoon season in the Philippines.
