COLUMBUS (Scrap Monster):  A local scrap metal dealer plans to petition the city this month for permission to expand its existing scrapyard.

The Kroot Corp., 2915 State St., plans to bring a request before the Columbus Board of Zoning Appeals to expand its existing scrap metal yard into an additional 6.85-acre area of its property that is currently unused. Expansion of the entire 18.45-acres property would consider it fully built out.

The proposed expansion would allow for a new processing and storage area on the property and two future building areas to the west of the existing operation. The expansion would also include a future building addition to an existing Kroot building just south of Behren Court, where the property has frontage.

Although the scrapyard sits on Kroot property, the company wrote in its application that the current zoning ordinance for the property requires that the scrapyard be kept as a conditional use. That means any changes, such as an expansion, must be approved by the city. The property is zoned I-3, which is designated for heavy industrial use.

However, Kroot wrote in its application with the city that the scrap metal industry is constantly changing, which means the company’s facility must be able to flexibly adapt to industry demands.

The requirement that all changes to the scrapyard be approved through the city often slows down the process of adapting the scrap metal facility to industry changes, Kroot wrote in its application.

So, the expansion proposal that accounts for current and future expansion is meant to be a master site plan that would allow the company to easily update its facility for the changes that will likely occur in the scrap metal industry into the future.

The Board of Zoning Appeals’ next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27.
