BEIJING (Scrap Register): Chinese copper concentrate imports from Peru shot up nearly 95% year-on-year during the first half of this year, according to latest data from the General Administration of Customs.

The northern Chinese trader agreed that import trades were absent due to the lack of arbitrage opportunities and the present of an import related loss at the moment, while Chinese domestic demand had remained low in the current summer lull.

However, China exported 42,615 mt of unwrought copper and alloys in June, up from 14,613 mt in June 2015; 84,984 mt in May, up from 24,005 mt in May 2015; and 32,411 mt in April, up from 23,627 mt in April 2015.

Global copper in-concentrate capacity is expected to rise around 4% per year during 20145-2019 period to reach 21 million mt per year in 2019 and Peru is projected to account for 25% of additional capacity from new mine projects and expansions through 2019.
