ATI Well-Positioned For Next-Gen Aviation Markets

Rich Harshman, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, of Allegheny Technologies, Inc. (ATI) emphasized in the company’s Q2 2016 earnings call last week that sales to the aerospace and defense market continue to drive ATI’s results, representing over 50% of total 2016 sales.

Harshman said, “Our aerospace market is being driven, in large part, by the growth of ATI’s next-generation mill products, forgings and castings.”

ATI’s business strategy is heavily focused on products which are proprietary to ATI or have high barriers to entry.  Based on long-term agreements, its technological prowess and its ability to meet build rate schedules, ATI seems well-positioned to capitalize on the increased build rates in commercial aerospace.

ATI has a foothold in legacy programs for both airframes and jet engines but has also been part of the research and development for the next generation of both. ATI has been awarded 300 new parts contracts which will represent over $1 billion n new business from 2016-2020.  The long-term agreements (LTAs) will lead to significant growth in ATI’s components business in precision forgings and castings as well as in powder metal alloys, which are usually used for additive manufacturing or 3D printing.

Structural changes occurring in the aerospace industry are benefiting ATI because they not only enabled but also led the changes in many cases. The airframe market is increasing its titanium content. Whereas the legacy Boeing 737 had roughly 4% titanium content, the Boeing 737 MAX has about 12% titanium content.

Jet engine firm order backlogs have been hitting new records this year. ATI expects the 2016 shipment year for its mill products, forgings and castings to be strong as it supports the 2018 original equipment manufacturer delivery schedule. Harshman also said the company sees strong next-generation spare parts demand beginning late this decade and running for a 20-to-30 year program life.

ATI has been at the forefront of developing products for hotter, next-generation airline and defense engines. Such products include nickel-based superalloys and complex titanium alloy powders for parts and components including those made with additive manufacturing technologies. ATI’s new hot-rolling and processing facility increased its capabilities for wider and flatter titanium alloys and nickel-based alloys in sheet, strip and plate. ATI is the largest producer of qualified plasma arc-melted titanium alloys preferred for use in jet engine rotating parts.

ATI has positioned itself well for the transition into the next generation airframe and jet engine programs while it continues to support legacy programs in both segments. The aerospace market appears a good fit for ATI’s differentiated product offerings with their enabling technologies and capabilities. Some of the aerospace research has already trickled into the automotive segment as the demand for hotter temperature engines in turbo-charged environments has led to increased demand for nickel-based and specialty alloy products.

Epiroc has secured an approximately SEK610 million (US$64 million) order from MMG Limited and its mining contractors, China Huaye and 23MCC, for underground mining equipment to support the expansion of the Khoemacau Copper Mine in Botswana. The order includes face drilling rigs, production drilling rigs, cable-bolting rigs, loaders and underground mine trucks, together with remote-control systems, spare parts, training and on-site technical support. The equipment will support MMG’s ongoing Khoemacau expansion, which is designed to increase annual production capacity from approximately 60,000 tonnes to 130,000 tonnes of copper metal in concentrate. The project includes construction of a new 4.5 Mt/y processing plant, which will lift total milling capacity to more than 8 Mt/y, alongside development of Zone 5 North, Mango and Zeta North-East. First copper concentrate from the expansion is expected in H1 2028. Epiroc said delivery of the new underground fleet will begin in Q4 2026 and is expected to be completed by Q2 2028, broadly aligning with the expansion schedule. The ordered fleet includes Boomer face drilling rigs, Simba production drilling rigs, Cabletec cable-bolting rigs, Scooptram loaders and Minetruck underground trucks, with several units equipped for automation and remote-control operation. The equipment order represents another execution milestone for the already-approved Khoemacau expansion, rather than a new production target. With procurement progressing and equipment deliveries scheduled through Q2 2028, the project continues to advance toward MMG’s planned increase in copper-in-concentrate capacity to 130,000 tonnes per year. The expansion represents a significant planned increase in Khoemacau’s copper production capacity in Botswana’s Kalahari Copper Belt.

Sibanye-Stillwater Approves Mt Lyell Restart, Targeting 26,000 t/y Copper From 2029
Sibanye-Stillwater has approved investment to proceed with the Mt Lyell copper-gold project in Tasmania, Australia, moving the historic operation toward a restart after more than a decade on care and maintenance. The company said the project has received a positive investment decision from its board, with steady-state production expected at approximately 26,000 tonnes of copper per year, alongside around 16,000 oz of gold and 116,000 oz of silver annually. First production is targeted for early 2029. The project is expected to require approximately A$490 million of capital investment and support an initial 23-year mine life. Sibanye-Stillwater plans around US$4.1 million of expenditure in H2 2026 as Mt Lyell moves into the execution phase, while broader project execution is expected to begin in H1 2027. The Tasmanian government has also confirmed the restart decision and said the project could create up to 300 jobs. Mt Lyell has been on care and maintenance since 2014, making the latest board approval a significant step toward bringing the mine back into production. The project forms part of Sibanye-Stillwater’s broader organic growth programme, alongside other approved investments across its portfolio. The positive investment decision establishes a clearer pathway for Mt Lyell to return to production and add around 26,000 tonnes per year of copper to future Australian supply at steady state. However, first production remains targeted for early 2029, meaning the project still needs to progress through execution and construction before contributing new copper units to the market.
