SHANGHAI, Jul. 22 (SMM) – Vale S.A. (Vale) produced 86.8 million tonnes of iron ore production in the second quarter of 2016, according to its e-mail to SMM.

The output, 9.3 million tonnes higher than the level in Q1, excludes Samarco’s attributable production, but includes iron ore acquired from third parties.

The company attributes the high output mainly to good performance of the Northern System.

Carajás achieved a production record for a second quarter of 36.5 million tonnes in 2Q, representing an increase of 4.9 million tonnes (or 15.5%) in relation to 2015’s Q2, mainly due to the increase in the overall equipment efficiency of the truck fleet and the ramp-up of the N4WS and N5S extension pits.

Nickel, copper and gold all reached a record for a second quarter of 2016, while coal output fell both from 2016’s Q1 and 2015’s Q2 levels.
