DRI production statistics
The preliminary data published by the World Steel Association indicates that the world direct reduced iron (DRI) production in May this year has increased marginally by nearly 2% when compared with the month before that.
The world DRI production during the month of May 2016 totaled 4.748 million metric tons, up marginally by 1.93% when compared with the 4.658 million metric tons production achieved during April this year.
According to World Steel data, Iran ranked first in DRI production during the month, pushing India to second spot. India and Mexico were the second and third largest DRI producing nations in May ‘16.
The estimated DRI output by Iran during April this year was 1.433 million metric tons. The country’s DRI output in May increased marginally by 0.56% when compared with the previous month. The DRI output by Iran had totaled 1.425 million metric tons during the previous month. India’s DRI production in May 2016 totaled 1.430 million metric tons, which is higher by almost 4% when compared with the previous month output of 1.376 million metric tons. The Mexican DRI output in May this year amounted to 510,000 metric tons, which is higher by 3.7% when compared with the output of 492,000 metric tons during April 2016.
The DRI output (in thousand metric tons) by the other eleven countries in May 2016 is as follows: Canada (130), Saudi Arabia (420), Trinidad & Tobago (Nil), Argentina (56), Peru (3), Venezuela (20), Egypt (241), Libya (41), South Africa (80), Qatar (200) and United Arab Emirates (184).
The World Steel production figures are based on the figures collected from 14 countries, which accounted for approximately 90% of the global DRI production in 2014.
