Aluminum capacity in operation in China has recovered significantly thanks to restarted capacity and release of new capacity, SMM learns.

SHANGHAI, May 10 (SMM) – Aluminum capacity in operation in China has recovered significantly thanks to restarted capacity and release of new capacity, SMM learns.

The amount of operational aluminum capacity rose to 30.34 million-tpy as of the end of April, up about 1 million-tpy from the end of 2015, SMM statistics showed.

That said, China’s aluminum output fell 2% year-on-year to 2.49 million tonnes in April, still in negative growth territory.

Release of new aluminum capacity will be quite limited during May and June, though, SMM expects. In fact, there is still an over 1 million-tpy gap in annualized operational aluminum capacity, SMM added.
