Global stainless steel output totaled 41.5 million mt in 2015: ISSF

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): According to recent statistics published by the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), the global stainless steel production dropped slightly by 0.30% during the year 2015, in comparison with 2014.

The total stainless steel output during the year 2015 amounted to 41.548 million m, marginally lower by 0.3% when compared with the output of 41.686 million mt in 2014. When compared with the production during 2013, the stainless steel output during 2015 has grown by almost 8%.

The production in the Western Europe/African region was down marginally by 0.7% to total 7.518 million mt during 2015, in comparison with the production of 7.570 million mt during 2014. The Central/ Eastern European region’s production declined sharply during the previous year. The output dropped considerably by 6.3% over the previous year. The region produced 259,000 metric tons of stainless steel during the entire year 2015.

The stainless steel output by the Americas too has declined by 2.3% during the year to 2.747 million mt. This is when matched with the production of 2.813 million mt during the previous year. The Chinese output dropped slightly by 0.6% year-on-year during 2015 to 21.562 million mt. The output by the Asian region reported marginal growth of 1.4% over the year. The stainless steel output totaled 9.461 million tonnes in 2015 as against the output of 9.333 million tonnes in 2014.

The stainless steel production during the last quarter of the previous year by Western Europe/Africa region totaled 1.780 million tonnes, rising significantly when compared with 1.673 million tonnes during Q3 2015. The quarterly output by Central/Eastern Europe region during Q4 last year totaled 61,000 metric tons. The output by the Americas during the quarter totaled 601,000 mt. China produced 5.324 million mt during Q4, whereas Asian region without China produced 2.385 million mt.
