SHANGHAI, Apr. 8 (SMM) – Malaysia will extend its ban on bauxite mining by another three months, effective April 15, Wenhua Finance reported.

Mining activity in Kuantan, a key bauxite producing state in the country, has been expanding rapidly in the past two years to meet demand from top buyer China.

But this break-neck expansion has led to growing complaint over the environmental damages it has caused.

Existing bauxite inventories in Kuantan shall not be exported before the ban is lifted, Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Malaysia's Natural Resources and Environment Minister said at a press conference.
