BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster) : According to most recent statistics, the total scrap exports by the EU-28 countries fell significantly during the first month of the current year in comparison with the previous year. The exports during the month were the lowest in six months.

The total exports during January this year amounted to 945,000 tons, 35.7% lower when compared to the total exports during January 2015. The scrap exports from the EU region had totaled 1.470 million tons during January last year. The export volumes were down by 22% when compared with the month before. The EU-28 region’s scrap exports had totaled 1.210 million tonnes during December 2015.

The largest export destination of EU scrap in January this year was Turkey. The exports to Turkey totaled 567,000 tons, accounting for nearly 60% of the total exports from the region. However, the scrap exports from the EU region to Turkey declined sharply by 42.9% year-on-year during the month.

India was the second largest importer of EU scrap. The total scrap exports to India increased by 28.2% to touch 107,000 tons during January 2016. Exports to India accounted for 11.4% of the total exports out of the EU region. In third place was Pakistan with total scrap imports from the EU amounting to 92,000 tons. The imports by the country accounted for just over 9.7% of the total EU exports. The scrap imports by Pakistan surged higher significantly by 80.3% over the previous year.
