BALTIMORE (Scrap Monster): A Maryland firm has announced that it will no longer accept plastics and tin for recycling. Instead, the company will focus more on paper products. NoCoMo Industries, Inc. has decided to stop collecting and sorting plastics and tin items with immediate effect.

According to Nicki Samson, general manager of NoCoMo, the board of directors voted unanimously to discontinue plastics and tin recycling after closely analyzing the recycling market performance during the past eighteen months. Ever since Chinese administration implemented strict norms for scrap imports into the country in 2013, handling recyclables has become more difficult. Recycling of plastics and tin had never earned anything for the company, but now there is no other alternative but to stop the service as recycling of these items have started to cost money for the firm, Samson noted.

The low pricing for recyclables has impacted the waste and recycling industry over the past two years. Recycling companies have been passing through extremely phase as sharp drop in oil prices have significantly brought down the cost of virgin materials. Consequently, many private firms have closed their doors. Also, many municipalities have dropped materials from recycling stream.

The recycling program will still accept aluminum and all paper products such as books, cardboard, and shredded paper. The operation is still growing and will continue to serve local businesses, Samson said. NoCoMo plans to expand its customer base for currently provided services, Samson added.

NoCoMo is a nonprofit workshop regulated by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education that provides employment for people with developmental and cognitive disabilities.
