Scrap surcharges for April see significant rise

Tata Steel’s UK specialty steels division has hiked scrap surcharges for April 2016 significantly.

EDGWARE (Scrap Monster): Tata Steel’s UK specialty steels division has hiked scrap surcharges for April 2016 significantly. Also, monthly alloy surcharges for April have been either kept unchanged or increased. The surcharges for nickel, cobalt and molybdenum witnessed hike when compared with those of March 2016.

According to company press release, the April surcharges for chromium, vanadium, silicon, manganese and titanium will be kept unchanged. The surcharges will be applicable to the company’s special carbon, alloy and spring steel semi-finished products, alloy and spring steel black bars, flats and rods and aircraft steel black bars.

The surcharge for chromium will remain unchanged at £1.35 per 0.10%, while those of vanadium will also remain unchanged £2.00 per 0.10%. It must be noted that the vanadium surcharge had surged during the first two months of the current year. Surcharge for silicon has been kept flat at £0.20 per 0.10%, whereas that of manganese too will be held flat at £0.10 per 0.10%. Meantime, titanium surcharge will continue to remain at all-time lows of £1.00 per 0.10%.

The company has decided to hike its surcharges for nickel, cobalt and molybdenum. The nickel surcharges will be hiked by 12% over the previous month to £4.50 per 0.10% in April 2016. Molybdenum surcharges will witness a rise of 6.2% month-on-month to £4.25 per 0.10%. The surcharge for cobalt will be £6.75 per 0.10%, rising almost 8% when matched with the previous month.

Meantime, Tata Steel has decided to almost double its scrap surcharge for April 2016. The scrap surcharge will see sharp rise from £45/tonne in March this year to £83/tonne for April. The scrap surcharge will be applicable to special carbon, alloy and spring steel semi-finished products, non-alloy special steel black bars and flats, alloy and spring steel black bars, flats and rods, and free cutting re-rolling billets.
